How to Create a Paw or Nose Print

A paw or nose print can become a meaningful keepsake for a family after their pet’s death. Follow these steps to create several clear prints, so each family member can have one.

Supplies You'll Need

You can use:

  • a pigment ink pad that will not stain hands;

  • calligraphy ink applied with a brush;

  • bingo dauber ink.

How to Create the Print

  1. After euthanasia, gently trim the nails on a hind paw and clip or shave the fur between the paw pads to help produce a clean print.

  2. For a paw print, first wipe the paw with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt and help the pads take the ink more evenly.

  3. Apply the ink to the paw or nose, then transfer the print onto cardstock or textured paper. For a nose print, gently roll the nose from side to side across the paper rather than pressing it straight down.

  4. Create several prints so each family member can have one, including those who could not be present.

  5. Add the pet’s name and the date to complete the keepsake, then include the print in the family’s condolence card.

Send the condolence card within three to five days after euthanasia. This helps ensure that your support reaches the family at the right time, without arriving so late that it may reopen difficult emotions.
