PROLONGED GRIEF DISORDER QUESTIONNAIRE

Acknowledging Grief After Pet Loss

We created this page because we believe awareness matters. While we are not mental health experts, we know from experience and from the stories shared by many that grief after losing a beloved pet is very real. Pets are not “just animals”—they are family members and companions who hold a special place in our lives. When they are gone, the sadness can feel overwhelming, and it is important not to minimize these difficult times.

The Prolonged Grief Disorder Questionnaire was developed by Holly G. Prigerson, Ph.D., Jiehui Xu, M.S., and Paul K. Maciejewski, Ph.D., to better understand grief after the death of a person. With permission from the authors, we have adapted it by adding “(pet)” to reflect the reality that many experience profound grief after losing an animal companion.

This self-assessment is not a diagnosis, but it may help you reflect on your feelings and consider whether additional support could be beneficial. More resources about grief can also be found at the Center for Research on End-of-Life Care- Weill Cornell Education website, which offers further guidance and educational material.

By answering 13 simple questions, you’ll receive a score that indicates whether seeking support from a mental health professional might be helpful.
